Foncine Le Haut, Haut Jura- France: Tourism,Nature, Family and Sports
Foncine Le Haut is a mountain village with 1000 inhabitants, situated in the heart of the Jura mountains,
in the Regionalnature reserve "Haut Jura" (alt. 870m-1220m) about 20 km from the Switzerland border.
Typical village of the "Haut Jura"
Our village has preserved its natural surroundings and kept its traditions; the result is a really charming
place, nested at the far end of the Saine valley, a river which starts 1 km upstlage itself.
It's situated between 2 tree covered mountains: the "Mont Noir" forest to the East and the "Du Bayard"
forest to the West (in the "La Haute Joux" uplands ).
Our village is particular in that the population is scattered; indeed we count 20 hamlets on the village
slopes . Over the past thirty years, the population has increased by about 30% thanks to the vision and
leadership of the Townhall and the contributions of its inhabitants.
Today, the village has thriving industrial and craft industries complementing the important agricultural
activity in the hamlets .
Moreover there is a strong tourist activity, which allows to accomodate a family clientele in good
conditions in Winter or in Summer, who appreciate the surrounding Nature and protected spaces.
Last but not least, our village is a land of champions: Foncine-le-Haut is the birth-place of Sylvain
Guillaume, the Olympic Winter games silver medal winner of the Nordic combination, Alberville 1992 .
